Interview Preparation
Everything you need to know to walk into your naturalization interview with confidence.
What is the Naturalization Interview?
The naturalization interview is a meeting with a USCIS officer to determine if you qualify for U.S. citizenship. The officer will review your N-400 application, test your English skills, and ask you civics questions. The entire interview typically lasts 20–30 minutes.
What Happens at the Interview
Check In at the USCIS Office
Arrive 15–30 minutes early. Bring your appointment notice, a valid photo ID, and your Permanent Resident Card (Green Card). Go through security and check in at the front desk.
Meet Your USCIS Officer
You will be called to a private room. The officer will ask you to raise your right hand and swear to tell the truth. Be calm, speak clearly, and answer honestly.
Review of Your N-400 Application
The officer will go through your N-400 form with you, asking questions about your background, travel history, employment, and personal information. Make sure you know everything on your application.
English Reading and Writing Test
You will be asked to read one sentence in English and write one sentence in English. The officer will read the sentence aloud for you to write. You have up to 3 attempts for each.
Civics Test — 10 Questions
The officer will ask you up to 10 civics questions from the official list of 100. You must answer at least 6 correctly to pass. The officer will stop asking once you have answered 6 correctly.
Decision — Pass, Fail, or Continuance
If you pass both the English and civics tests, you may receive a decision that day. If you fail one part, you will be given a second chance within 60–90 days. If approved, you will receive a notice for the Oath Ceremony.
Oath of Allegiance Ceremony
At the Oath Ceremony, you will take the Oath of Allegiance to the United States. After this, you will receive your Certificate of Naturalization and officially become a U.S. citizen!
